KBS and NYSID Team Up to Empower Disabled Workers Across New York

Tuesday, December 17, 2024

In a powerful partnership that is changing lives and elevating service quality, KBS and the New York State Industries for the Disabled, Inc. (NYSID) are working together to create meaningful job opportunities for individuals with disabilities. By teaming up with Albany-based NYSID, KBS is providing both janitorial and exterior services across New York while supporting a workforce that brings diversity, dedication, and impact to every contract.

Founded in 1975, NYSID is a nonprofit dedicated to advancing employment opportunities for people with disabilities and veterans. NYSID connects state entities and private companies with member agencies that support individuals with disabilities. KBS has been working with NYSID for nearly two decades, currently employing 247 disabled individuals across 287 locations. The partnership requires that at least 51% of the workforce under these contracts consists of people with disabilities.

"Working with NYSID allows us to hire a diverse workforce and serve some of the most prestigious accounts in New York in a way that positively impacts the community," says Leo MacAdangdang, KBS Executive Vice President, who helps to oversee the program for KBS.

KBS serves as a corporate partner under NYSID's contracts, with NYSID connecting KBS with member agencies that help source employees. KBS works closely with these agencies, handling the paperwork, interviewing candidates, and ensuring each hire is set up for success.

"Our partnerships range from agencies specializing in supporting individuals with autism to those helping individuals in sober living facilities," explains Amy Marotta, KBS Administrative Department Manager, who dedicates her time to the NYSID partnership.

Maureen O’Brien, President & CEO of NYSID, praises the collaboration: "Partnering with KBS helps create competitive integrated employment for hundreds of individuals with disabilities each year. KBS brings professionalism and expertise to every project, and shares NYSID’s mission to empower individuals with disabilities. Their commitment to community and high-quality service makes them a valued partner."

One Team Member’s Journey

The impact of the partnership is reflected in the lives of people like James Brescia, a KBS employee whose journey from overcoming personal struggles, including incarceration, to becoming a crew lead is a testament to the power of opportunity. James started as a janitorial crew member, and through dedication and a strong work ethic, was promoted to crew lead in 2019.

"Having this job has lifted me to a place where there's something to lose," James says. "I'm respected not just as a supervisor, but as a person."

He was recently nominated for NYSID's 2024 Outstanding Performer award, a recognition of his dedication and growth.

Our Commitment to a More Inclusive Workforce

Through its partnership with NYSID, KBS is not only enhancing its services across New York but also contributing to a more inclusive workforce. This collaboration highlights KBS's commitment to corporate responsibility, community impact, and providing opportunities that transform lives.
